The scarf's design draws from a source image that is an architectural detail on the exterior east side of the former Toronto Board of Education offices in 1985.   The source image is a relief sculpture of a figure genuflecting before the "lamp of learning."

The sandstone and almond hues in the relief sculpture transform to a pale reflective gold due to the properties of the Charmeuse silk medium.

This scarf acknowledges the progressive changes that were made the trustee, Olivia Chow, now mayor of Toronto.   She championed the inclusion of anti-homophobia education within school curricula and the establishment of anti-discrimination policies and teacher training within the Board.  This was in response to the circumstances around death of Kenneth Zeller, a teacher who belonged to the LGBTQ community.
